The Huguenot Society
of
South Carolina

The library of the Huguenot Society of South Carolina is located at 138 Logan Street in Charleston, SC. It is open from 9 am until 2 pm, Monday through Friday. The library is closed on major holidays and for two weeks at the end of December.  There is a research fee of $10 for non-members. Consultations with the staff researcher can also be arranged.  Researchers are encouraged to contact the Society prior to their arrival so that materials will be ready for them.

The library of the Society includes over 4,500 books, journals, newsletters and files covering the history of French Protestants around the world. In addition, there are books and files on South Carolina history and families, as well as CDs of the Quarto volumes of the Huguenot Society of Great Britain and Ireland, the New York Genealogical & Biographical Record and The New England Historical and Genealogical Register. The library can be accessed on-line [Please click here to access the on-line catalogue.] but the Society is not a lending library and use of the materials and books is limited to site visits.  However, the staff of the Society is also available to provide information about the holdings of the Society and to answer research questions. In addition to books and journals, the library includes some 2200 vertical files which contain information gathered by the Society over the years. Membership files are also available to researchers, with guidance from the Staff. The staff researcher can also help with translations of articles from French to English.

Researchers who are unable to visit the library can use the research form [Click here for a copy.] to request information or copies of documents. Members receive a 10% discount when using the form. Requests are answered in the order they are received and may take several weeks to complete. Payment should be made in advance by cash or check.

Materials at the Society are still being entered into the on-line library catalogue which will be updated periodically.   The manual card catalogue is also still available at the Society. For more information about the library and/or research, please contact the staff researcher on-line at archivist@huguenotsociety.org or by telephone at (843) 723-3235. Consultation with the staff researcher can be arranged by appointment.
