A Day at Strawberry Chapel of Ease
Our Executive Director, Elizabeth F. Gay, was back on the road on Saturday, October 14, visiting Strawberry Chapel in the Childsbury Town Site near Cordesville, SC. This Chapel of Ease of St. John’s Parish, Berkeley County, SC was built c. 1725 to accommodate settlers. A program was provided by the Society of First Families of South Carolina and Senior Warden Robert T. Ball, MD and Junior Warden Mark Ball delivered remarks on the recent renovation of the chapel.
Under the grand oaks of the church yard rest many ancestors and among them several Huguenot lines…just a few noted during the visit were DuBose, Guerin, Huger, Motte, Poyas, and Prioleau.
The chapel renovation is truly beautiful and in the photo posted we can enjoy the exposed brick which will be returned to its restored condition with stucco making this view of the bricks and their patterns a real treat. The chapel is on the National Register of Historic Places and will celebrate its Tricentennial in 2025.
It was a lovely program followed by a picnic on the grounds where several Huguenot Society members enjoyed visiting and sharing lineage stories.
